The UN General Assembly established July 30 as the International Day of Friendship in 2011. Because it is tied to a calendar date rather than a weekday, it stays on July 30 whether that falls on a Monday, a weekend, or anything in between.

The idea is broader than sending a message to a best friend. The observance frames friendship between people, cultures, communities, and countries as one small way to encourage peace and mutual understanding. You can hold that larger purpose and still mark it with a very ordinary act: call someone, share lunch, or tell a friend what you value about them.

Why another date may appear in your search

Friendship Day also has local traditions. India, for example, widely celebrates it on the first Sunday in August. Schools, friendship bands, shops, and social posts often follow that Sunday custom rather than July 30. Other communities may use their own dates or may not treat Friendship Day as a major occasion at all.

Neither choice makes a personal message less genuine. If you are planning a public event, name the date you are following so guests are not confused. If you are simply contacting a friend, the best date is the one on which you actually reach out.
